      Mitochondria and endoplasmic reticulum play different roles in cellular activities. However, recent studies suggest that they interact on each other both structurally and functionally, which provides a basis for substrate transport between organelles, maintaining intracellular Ca2+ homeostasis as well as regulating cellular apoptosis and autophagy.
