Ever since the ancient times, fighting play actors have learned wushu and mixed it with their performance. Kunqu, known as the father of the different operas, is good at interpreting emotions between men and women. Paying more attention to civil plays than combat plays has led to the deficiency of Kunqu’s martial plays. Nevertheless, this has given the fighting play actors of Kunqu a good chance since the founding of the People’s republic of China. Wang Zhiquan and Zhang Mingrong learned traditional boxing, wushu weapons, acrobatics, rhythmic gymnastics and so on. They integrated them with military play and adapted and created many fighting plays and taught their pupils such as Lou Yunxiao and Qianyuting to learn these plays. The author watched some plays performed by Lou Yunxiao and Qian Yuting, who are of the golden ages of the martial play actors, and interviewed Wang Zhiquan and Zhang Mingrong. The article elaborated on how the actors of Shanghai Kunqu combat play learned wushu and how they adapted the plays to form the present military play of Kunqu in Shanghai. |
