Sheep-carrying wrestling is a kind of Chinese wrestling with a long history in Xinzhou city, Shanxi Province. It is a folk sport with the characteristics of popularity, locality, entertainment and competitiveness. As early as in the 1960s, Xinzhou was known as the Home of Wrestling. In June 2008, at the approval of the State Council, Xinzhou sheep-carrying wrestling was included in the 2nd list of the National Intangible Cultural Heritage. The wrestling, therefore, became a cultural symbol of Xinzhou with distinct locality. From the viewpoint of a non-sport professional, the paper tries to analyse the origin, name, prize, competition rule and the representative inheritors so as to make an aesthetic exploration of the rich cultural connotation of the wrestling. It intends to help the development of the sport, which can be perpetual with vitality. |
