Objective: Use the cross-lagged research design to explore the influence of the coaches′ caring behavior and the college non-professional men′s basketball athletes′perceived intragroup identity on their sports engagement. Methods: Use the teachers′ caring behavior scale (TCBS), perceived intragroup identity scale (PIIS), and the athlete engagement questionnaires (AEQ), to conduct a twelve-week, two-stage longitudinal follow-up investigation on 607 college non-professional men′s basketball athletes. Results: For non-professional men′s basketball athletes, there was a trans-temporal stable positive correlation between coaches′ caring behavior, athletes′ perceived intragroup identity and engagement (P<0.01). The cross-lagged analysis revealed that, coaches′ caring behavior could positively predict athletes′ perceived intragroup identity and engagement after 12 weeks (P<0.001), and the athletes′ perceived intragroup identity could positively predict engagement after 12 weeks (P<0.001). Moreover, on the influence chain of coaches′ caring behavior and athlete engagement, athlete′s perceived intragroup identity had a mediation effect. Conclusion: For college non-professional men′s basketball athletes, the coaches′ caring could enhance athletes′ perceived intragroup identity and improve their engagement. Furthermore, the coaches′ caring behavior could indirectly promote the sports engagement by enhancing athletes′ perceived intragroup identity. |
