As one of the important psychological benefits of marathon, self-transcendence has received little attention in terms of its formation process mechanism and significance. By using semi-structured interviews and online running weblog, thematic analysis was conducted to explore the self-transcendence experience of marathon runners. The results find that the self-transcendence experience of marathon runners is "an embodied practical experience of seeking personal development and demonstrating self-existence", which is of great significance to runners. The physical behavior, mental state and environmental conditions are dynamically interacted to accomplish the self-transcendence. According to the changes of runners' physical and mental states, the self-transcendence experience can be divided into three stages. Among them, "hitting the wall" is an important and key stage where the intense confrontation between the body and mind stimulates runners' potential and strong will to the greatest extent. The research explores the internal driving force for quality development of marathon from the micro level, providing a new theoretical perspective to better understand the marathon runner group and improve the quality of marathon experience.
